Welcome to the Student Action website, take a look around and find out a little bit about what we do and how we help the local community. Then, when you are as super-overly excited as we are about the projects that we run, all you need to do is sign up and start volunteering.

We aim to empower students; giving them inspiring and exhilarating opportunities that benefit the local community in Greater Manchester.
We provide volunteers and project managers with unique opportunities to gain leadership and management skills, enabling them to make a significant impact at their time in University.  These skills will be invaluable for future jobs.

This year we have 37 weekly projects and 5 yearly projects. This is your chance to improve your CV, get invaluable free training and have some fun!

Don’t study at the University of Manchester? It doesn’t matter, Student Action is Open to Students and staff from all the Universities in Manchester.

University of Manchester , Manchester Metropolitian, Royal College of Northern Music and Salford University.

So there are no excuses not to sign and get involved in one of the many projects that we run around Manchester!

All our projects require (apart from ‘homeless’ or ‘environmental’ projects) CRB checks (UK citizens) or a Letter of Good Conduct (EU or International Students).
Look out for the weekly email which states which day and time the CRB checks will be taking place. Here is what you need to bring.
Plus here is the guidance about filling out your forms out.
CRB'S TAKE 4 WEEKS TO COME THROUGH!!

We are in urgent need of drivers! Many of our projects cannot happen unless we find more drivers.  If you are 21 or older, have a clean driving license and have been driving for two years then we desperately need YOU.

All you need to do is apply for a union minibus test at the Activities Centre (open Monday - Friday 10am to 4pm) or email us.  You can then drive for us and/or any society!

Blog...

Each week we will out up a round up of the exciting events and information that we want to share with our volunteers

It has been yet another busy week for Student Action, kicking off with a fantastic evening for the beneficiaries of RAG, in the Whitworth Art Gallery. What an excellent way to not only thank the committee for their hard work but also to hear from the charities who have benefitted from their brilliant achievements. We also need to say a huge thank you for our own donation, it really does go a fantastically long way in supporting our work in the local community!

Our elderly community is having a brilliant few weeks to with our final Wednesday afternoon social at a pub in Didsbury. We also have in the pipe line a jubilee party to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee!

Finally, we need to mention the Volunteer of the year awards. This year Student Action had 9 fantastic nominations and received a £400 donation. It was a fantastic afternoon and a great way to recognise the hard work of some of our lovely volunteers! Also an extra special shout out to Jack and Jason who came away with 1st and 3rd places respectively. Student action stole the show and its all thanks to you our amazing volunteers!

Blog

So another week gone and time to update the blog…It’s a good job we are so busy or we might not have anything to write!

First of all a massive Thank you to everyone who came to our Student Action Social earlier this week, I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did! What a great opportunity to get to know some of the other volunteers over a delicious curry!

This week I have also had the chance to get involved with some of the preparation for the ‘Volunteer of the year’ award which is due to take place next week! I take a staring role in a little film about the winner’s work with us and about the award itself!

We had another great event for our local elderly community this Sunday, we went to see a film out at Parrs-wood with groups going to see Titanic in 3D and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, both were a roaring success.

I understand everyone is busy with exams and essays but if you have been trying to get volunteering spots but have been finding It hard now is the time to apply with less people applying it is a fantastic time to get some extra experience under your belt!

On a final note, keep your eyes peeled for our ‘Sleepover at the Library’ event, more information coming soon!

Good luck with all your work!

xx

This week has been yet another busy week for the Student Action team, with the massive range of activities going on there are even fewer reasons than usual not to get involved!

We kicked things off this semester by starting to offer drop-in training sessions every Tuesday and Thursday! This week we had Child Protection and Safeguarding children and Homeless awareness training. Everyone agreed it was a fantastic way to get a little more experience and to broaden the range of projects people felt comfortable volunteering on! Keep an eye on the regular email to see what’s coming up next!

Another exciting part of our week was a fundraising meeting for our first every international project to Sri Lanka! We had a wonderful talk from Will, head of RAG and also spent some time discussing all the things that we will need while we are out there, which helped get everyone even more excited about this brilliant new pilot project!

For all of those you who are sending in applications for the Sunday Project, the deadline is 5PM today (Wednesday 25th) and I will start going through them and getting back to every one ASAP!

A final note on the code of conduct! For most of you this is irrelevant, as you are already fantastic, however I would just like re iterate the importance of fulfilling the commitments that you do make to Student Action. We rely on you guys to make Student Action the success story that it is. However when there is a break down of communication things start to go wrong! We understand things change and some situations are unavoidable but please when these situations arise do let us know ASAP and AT LEAST 24 hours in advance so we can make a plan B.

I hope you are all having a brilliant week and hope to see you all next week at the social! We will be going our for a curry Tuesday evening, come into the office and see me, so I can tell you the plan!

xx

18/04/2012

This week has been a busy one, with everyone getting back after Easter. With exams looming, course work due and dissertations to be written you could be forgiven for thinking that Student Action might slow down, but you be wrong! We are as busy as ever, if not more so with people realising the importance of that extra something on your CV!

This week we held one of our monthly Film Afternoons and settled down to watch 'The Young Victoria' with some of our favourite Elderly Ladies and Gentlemen from around town! A fantastic afternoon was had by all, with the volunteers enjoying is just as much as our guests!

We also had an information meeting about our latest project, ‘The Sunday Project’ which is looking like its going to be a really fantastic project which will support separated families around the Manchester area.

As always, feel free to drop by and say hello to me in the office or drop me an email!

Remember, volunteering is a great way to take a break from studying hard and to get great experience at the same time!
