Your Students’ Union represents the interests of all students at the University of Manchester - your views, opinions, ideas and experiences are important to us.
The Union is independent from the University and all University of Manchester students are automatically members.
We make sure that students lead the work of the Union in the following ways:
Following a chance to discuss the six chosen bright ideas all students will have an opportunity to vote online to say whether they think those ideas are bright or not. Whatever the student vote decides becomes a reailty and shapes Students' Union work.
Student OfficersThe Students' Union Executive team are a group of students that are elected by students each year to guide the work of the Union and to ensure that the Union makes bright ideas happen. Half of the executive team are in paid full time sabbatical (taking tine out from or at the end of their studies) positions.
The Executive team also attend all levels of University Committees and represent the voice and interests of the whole Student population in University decisions and discussions.
The Executive Officer and Union Council elections are in March each year. Any University of Manchester student can stand for a majority of elected positions. Elections are currently open - look at www.studentelections.co.uk for more information about standing and voting.

Hey Guys! I'm Mo Saqib your Academic Affairs Officer.
Over the course of the next couple of weeks I'll be adding various bits and bobs telling you about all the exciting things your Students' Union is doing to ensure you get a quality education whilst you're at the University of Manchester. So watch this space and do check back!
If you ever need to get in touch with me, feel free to email me or just stop me as you see me around and I'll do my best to help!
Thanks for checking out my page and I look forward to meeting many of you during the next year :-)
Best wishes,
Email: mo.saqib@manchester.ac.uk

I'm Amaya Dent, your Student Activities Officer, and it's my job to oversee student societies and student-led events. So if you're involved in running a society or want to set one up, come talk to me in the Student Activities Centre, which is on the top floor of the main Students Union (Biko) building (there's free tea and coffee here too). I also organize our epic 'Pangaea' festivals twice a year after exams, and the unique 'Biko Live' arts nights, both of which are run by student volunteers, so if you'd like to get involved, get in touch! Talk to me about ideas, schemes, and generally fun stuff that happens (or stuff you think should happen...) for students at Manchester Uni.
Feel free to email me or stop me and say hello.

Amanda - Campaigns OfficerHello I am Amanda Walters and I am your Students' Union Campaigns Officer. As Campaigns Officer I oversee all of the Union campaigns, run the priority campaign, help campaigning societies and campaign on those things students care about in wider society.
This year my main aims are:
1. To do a survey of students to find our what their biggest cause of emissions is and then, through awareness raising and campaigning, to try and encourage students to change their behaviour on this one issue.
2. To campaign for the University to divest from unethical and environmentally damaging companies.
3. To help campaigning societies in making strategy and keeping on track.
If you are interested in getting involved in these campaigns then please email me at: campaigns@umsu.manchester.ac.uk.
For more information on how to get involved or start up your own campaign then please go to the Campaigning tab of the website.
Take care
Jeremy - Communications OfficerHeya, I'm Jeremy Buck, your Communications Officer. I keep all the students in the loop about Union events and important news, so keep an eye out for my emails and posters so you never miss a trick.
I am also making it a priority to gather student opinion on the subjects that matter to you, so that UMSU can get even better at improving your life at Manchester.
If you need help publicising a society event, getting your message to the right place, or just want to chat and rant about what's bugging you, then please come and visit me in the Exec office on the ground floor of the UMSU Biko Building, or drop me an email.
Take care
Letty - General Secretary My name's Letty Newton and I am the UMSU General Secretary. It is my role to stick together the opinions of students and all the work the Union does and ensure that we are representing you well to the various structures of the University. Due to this a large part of my time is spent going to University meetings, the most senior of which is the University's Board of Governors and in this I work closely with the Academic Affairs Officer.
It would be impossible for one person to understand every student, so the General Secretary's role also involves ensuring that the Union's staff, building, commercial outlets and finances are working to represent students interests. In jargon this is referred to as 'enhancing the student experience', but what this means is giving you the best opportunities for activities and feeding back to the University what you think of your academic experience here.

Student Direct Officer: Nick Renaud-KomiyaI'm Nick Renaud-Komiya the Editor of your free student newspaper The Mancunion.
The Mancunion is entirely run by students - if you are interested in getting invlolved then please don't hesitate to get in touch! We are the biggest student newspaper in the country, so we always need new volunteers; whether it is your first week or your final year, everyone is welcome.
You can be involved as much or as little as you like, you can just read us on the bus, enter the competitions, or investigate your very own news story.
A brand new paper comes out every Monday; grab your free copy from the newsstands about campus and in the foyer of the UMSU building.

Hannah - Welfare OfficerHi. my name is Hannah Paterson and I'm the welfare officer this year. At the moment I work in the shared office on the ground floor with the rest of exec. However due to the refurb we're doing to the building this may change, so if you want me please ask at reception and they'll track me down.I work to provide you with representation to the university and beyond on all matters welfare related, which includes student support.
I also help to facilitate many campaigns and activities that are run from the Union including: health, liberation, black students, disabled students, mental health, sexual health, student safety and Nightline.
If you need any information or advice when you're at university or want to get involved in all the exciting things going on in the world of welfare come drop in and say hi, or email me.
Take care
Sylvia - Women's OfficerHi all, I'm Sylvia Barnett your Women's Officer, elected by and for women students. You can find me in the Exec office on the ground floor of South campus Student Union. I am responsible for the welfare and representation of women students in the University and for running the women's campaign.
This year there are a number of issues I want to focus on:
Zero Tolerance to Sexual Harassment: The NUS 'Hidden Marks' report shows that 1 in 7 women students are victim to serious physical or sexual assault during their time at university. See the report here
Women's Safety: I want to combat the culture of victim-blaming, that is, the idea that the person subjected to physical or sexual assault or harassment is to blame for the abuse they receive. To claim that harassment and assault are caused by the victim dressing in a 'provocative' way, or being intoxicated, or walking home alone, etc., is to completely misconstrue the problem, and to add feelings of guilt to the complex emotions the person will be feeling after an assault. However, I also recognise that we exist in a culture where women are still not safe to go out alone at night. Therefore I want to work towards the introduction of a night cafe in Fallowfield, to provide students with a safe-space at night, with information, support, and taxi numbers.
Reproductive freedoms: This is particularly relevant in light of the government's plans to reform the way abortion advice is offered, which may potentially lead to anti-abortion and pro-life groups gaining power over the individual's decision as to whether or not to have an abortion. I will run pro-choice events and discussions to highlight the importance of a woman's autonomy over her own body, and support national campaigns to persuade the government to rethink its strategy.
I also want to work hard to diversify the women's campaign so any ideas, comments or problems you have please come share them. I want to make our women's movement more inclusive and open to all women. My office can be made in to a women only space at your request and also has tea and coffee as well as lots of children's games and books. So pop by any time for a chat, and some advice or just to use it as a chill out space.

“The University of Manchester Students’ Union Executive shares the concern of students and many young people at the disproportionate sentencing that has been given out in relation to student protests. Students should not be deterred from legitimately voicing their opinions through protest, and sentencing designed to deter students from doing so is damaging and dangerous in limiting their right to protest.”

Meetings, which commence at 6pm, are held in the Council Chamber on the top floor of the Students' Union.

The University of Manchester Students' Union is a proud member of NUS and all the traditions of activism, campaigning and value for money that come with it.
NUS is a voluntary membership organisation with 600 constituent members- virtually every college and university in the country- and as such NUS represents over 7 million students.
Run by student officers elected by our members, NUS is the largest student organisation in the world.
NUS fights barriers to education, empowers students to shape both a quality learning experience and the world around them, and supports influential, democratic and well-resourced students' unions.
NUS has forged extremely close links with the two other major national organisations in the student movement; AMSU (Association of Managers in Students' Unions) and NUS Services, which ensures that all Students' Unions in the country have access to products and services.
Every time you vote in the union, read a copy of Student Direct, or buy a pint in the SU Bar, you've benefitting from NUS!
For more info, please visit: NUS

NUS Extra is a discount card offered by the National Union of Students. This increases the number of shops and businesses in which you are eligible for a student discount, at the cost of £10.

As a member of the NUS we send a delegation each year to their annual conference and all extraordinary conferences. You can stand in an election to be part of this delegation.
Each year, we hold an election to determine our delegates. This is for NUS conference, a yearly gathering of representitives from every Students' Union in the country.
Annual Conference is the supreme decision-making body of NUS. This is where all policy for the coming year is voted for by representitives from each Student Union. This is also where elections take place for NUS officers, a national version of the sabbatical officers we have here at UMSU.
The dates often change each year. However, stay informed by looking out for announcements or posters from your Students' Union. Voting takes place on-line, so keep checking your university email addresses!
Listed below is current Students' Union policy. All policy passed by the General Meeting stays in force for three years, and has to be followed by the Executive committee.
Our policy is all submitted and voted on by students. Have you got a bright idea that you think the Union should be working on? Share it here.
In Solidarity With Freedom In The Middle East and North Africa (valid until 11/5/14)
This policy expresses UMSU's support for and solidarity with those protesting against repressive regimes in the Middle East and North Africa. We renamed one of our meeting rooms to the Khaled Said room as a result of this policy, in order to recognise the impact of Khaled Said's untimely death on the Egyptian Revolution of 2011. The policy also asks the Union to raise awareness of the impact of these uprisings on University of Manchester students from these locations, through inviting speakers and publishing an article in the Mancunion; and calls for the University to support any students from these areas who may lose their sponsorship as a result of the uprisings.
Zero Tolerance To Sexual Harassment (valid until 11/5/14)
This policy led to us becoming a NUS-accredited zero tolerance union in 2011. The policy outlines a range of behaviour which we will not tolerate, requires the Women's Officer to run a publicity campaign about the policy, and ensures that all Union staff are appropriately trained to respond effectively to behaviour that we feel constitutes sexual harassment. It bans images that objectify, fetishise or stereotype people; and calls on the Union to lobby the University to change its sexual harassment policy.
Going Green (valid until 11/5/14)
This policy sets out a range of practices for the Union to lobby the University to change for environmental reasons, including increasing the amount of recycling; providing free drinking water on campus; supporting greener travel and promoting ethical investment. It also requires the Union to become greener, through switching to electricity from renewable sources; providing more seasonal and locally-produced food; introducing Meat-Free Mondays in our cafe and many other methods. The policy states that the Union will run a Going Green campaign week every year, as well as promoting sustainable living to students. Check out how the Union is implementing this policy in a progress report here.
Fighting The Cuts - The Next Steps (valid until 11/5/14)
This policy passed as a response to the University's decision to raise undergraduate tuition fees to £9,000, and states our continued opposition to cuts to higher education in the UK. It outlines our opposition to all cuts at the University of Manchester, and our support for striking members of UCU and other unions, as well as containing a public statement opposing broader government cuts to public services.
Winning For International Students: Representation (valid until 20/10/13)
This policy creates guaranteed positions for international students on Students' Union Council, and requires the Executive to work with the University to identify committees where an international student perspective would be valuable.
Unite Against Fascism - Stop The BNP and EDL (valid until 20/10/13)
This policy reiterates our strong opposition to racism, fascism and Islamophobia, and commits the Union to support and fund travel to the Unite Against Fascism demonstration in London on 6th November 2010.
Students In Charge Of The Union?! (valid until 20/10/13)
This policy aimed to change the way decisions are made in the Union, by calling a referendum to decide whether General Meetings should be moved online. The policy required a majority of voters at a General Meeting to call the referendum, which it gained, but the referendum required 3000 students to take part for the decision-making structures to change. This did not occur, so the changes outlined in the policy were not implemented.
Staying Ethical (valid until 20/10/13)
This policy establishes a code on sustainable and ethical business that the Union must adhere to in its commercial decisions. It states that any company that the Union does business with must meet certain ethical standards, such as being free of child, forced or slave labour; not damaging people's lives through its actions or products; and not contributing to climate change. This policy outlines the harmful practices conducted by companies we boycott in our shop, such as Coca Cola and Nestle, and requires the Union to lobby external organisations such as NUS and the University to adopt similar sustainable and ethical business codes. Check out how the Union is implementing this policy in a progress report here.
Peace Through Education (valid until 20/10/13)
This policy reaffirms the Union's decision to twin with An-Najah University in Palestine, and encourages a more active relationship between the two organisations. It states our opposition to violation of Palestinian human rights, particularly concerning students' free access to their education. It also states that the Union will hold an annual Right to Education Week, working with a range of student societies to raise awareness of the academic needs of An-Najah students, as well as promoting and facilitating a speaking tour of Palestinian students on our campus. Check out how the Union is implementing this policy in a progress report here.
The Higher Education Funding Crisis (valid until 20/10/13)
This policy states our opposition to government cuts to higher education budgets, placing them in the context of broader public service cuts and outlining our support for university and other public sector workers in fighting these cuts, including supporting strike action. It pledges the Union's active support for students at Manchester using various methods to oppose cuts within the University, as well as stating that we will promote the issue to students and mobilise them to campaign against cuts. The policy also commits the Union to supporting the NUS-UCU march of 10th November 2010 (to which we sent 14 coachloads of Manchester students) and the Right to Work demonstration in Manchester on October 23rd 2010.
Would you like to change any of these policies, or have you got a bright idea that you think the Union should be working on? Share it here.
Every year, the Students' Union affiliates to a variety of external organisations.
We do this to ensure that our members' needs and interests are served by these affiliations.

What are Assemblies and how do they work?
As a membership organisation our students make decisions and lead the way about what we should be working on and how we can improve things for students at Manchester.
Any student can submit an idea that they think will make things better for Manchester students - you just need to fill in the online form HERE
If your idea is something that is operational then we can get working on it asap. If your idea is about something that needs a discussion or a debate then you will need to present it to a panel of 20 students that will decide if they think it would benefit students at Manchester. Before you submit an idea please think about the impact you would like your idea to have if it is taken on by the Union - what do you want a panel to decide? what actions do you think should be taken? What information is relevant that you might need to provide?
All students are very welcome to come along and speak or hear discussion about ideas but only the student panel get a vote. Student panels are selected randomly to represent the demographic make up of our student population eg half men and half women etc.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact Ian our Campaigns & Democracy Assistant on ian.feis@manchester.ac.uk
IDEAS we are currently working on:
The above ideas were passed by a UMSU Assembly or an all student online vote. Do you have an idea for a future Assembly? SUBMIT AN IDEA FOR AN ASSEMBLY HERE
Have you got an idea about a positive change that you feel will make life better for Manchester students?
Then share it with us!
Please note - There will now be no assemblies to decide on ideas until the new Academic year.

The regulations for the Student Elections 2012 are available to download here
Please read them carefully and don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions at all. It is always better to ask than to break a rule by accident.
Students standing for election no longer have to submit traditional manifestos in the way they previously have in the past. We are giving all candidates the opportunity to submit up to one side of A4 for non-Exec roles and up to 2 sides of A4 for Exec roles that they can use in any way they like to encourage students to vote for them. So if you are standing for election you could submit a traditional manifesto if you like and use the space to explain why students should vote for you and what you stand for, or submit something in a more informal poster style - essentially you can be as creative as you like!
If you are a PG student interested in being an Exec Officer but you don;t graduate until Dec 2012 then it may still be possible for you to stand for election and take up an Exec role if you are successful. Please email trish.lee@manchester.ac.uk for more information.
Exec Officers work full time (minimum of 35 hours a week) in the Students' Union. They are paid an annual sum of £15,500 and are entitled to 30 days annual leave.
Individual students decide when they wish to campaign and how much time they wish to spend campaigning. We ask candidates to bear in mind that students can get election fatigue so spending weeks with banners and door knocking is unlikely to translate into votes. If you are worried about how much time you might need to spend campaigning think about resources available to you online that maximise the effectiveness of your campaign without too much physical campaigning being needed. You can also have any number of students supporting your campaign and helping you to get elected so speak to your friends and share the load.
To stand for an Exec role you just need to fill out a simple online nominations form here and then come and have your photo taken.
To stand for a voluntary role you just need to fill out a simple online nominations form here and then come and have your photo taken

Between 9am on the 18th of May and 12noon on Friday the 8th June the Students’ Union will be asking University of Manchester students to vote on two questions in the latest Student Referenda.
Why are you being asked to vote and where did these questions come from?
At the latest UMSU Union Assembly on the 30th of May a representative panel of students voted on a range of ideas which had been submitted by the student body. Ideas that gained 75% or more of the panel vote were automatically passed. Ideas that gained 25% or less support failed to pass. The two ideas above received between 26% and 74% votes and so these are now being put to the entire student body who will have the opportunity to take part in the decision using online voting through the MyManchester portal.
