Activities Interns

The University of Manchester Students’ Union represents and supports over 40,000 students who make up the diverse and exciting student body at the University of Manchester.  We provide representation, social spaces, activities and a range of services for our members.  We are committed to providing excellent opportunities for our staff to learn and develop within their roles and offer an exciting new and changing environment in which you can grow in experience and skills.  We are currently looking to fill three intern roles within the Student Activities team.

The Student Activities team supports students in running societies and their events, volunteering projects through Student Action, and fundraising events and challenges through RAG. We also support the student media outlets, comprising of the Mancunion newspaper, Fuse FM and Fuse TV.

We are looking to recruit three full-time interns to support the activities of RAG, Student Action and the Media for the academic year 2012/13. These roles will begin in mid June and will last for one year. We are committed to providing excellent learning and development opportunities for our students and interns. Therefore these positions are open only to current University of Manchester students. They will normally be based in our main building on Oxford Road.

 

ACTIVITIES INTERN (STUDENT ACTION)

With over 30 weekly projects, as well as regular one-off events, we have a busy and active student-led volunteering community. We are looking for an intern who will continue to develop existing projects, as well as enable students to explore new ideas in line with recognised needs in the local area.

You will coordinate the ongoing development of a high quality service alongside the student project leaders and Student Activities Manager, to help deliver excellent experiences for volunteers and service users alike.

You will be committed to making a difference in the community through volunteering, and have experience of performing voluntary roles. You will have excellent organisational skills and the desire to help students develop their skills and knowledge by supporting them to take the lead in running projects in their area of interest.

ACTIVITIES INTERN (RAG)

Manchester RAG support student to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity every year, through a huge range of projects, events and challenges. With activities ranging from the traditional annual Beerfest and Bogle events, to students climbing Kilimanjaro and diving with sharks, the intern is responsible for supporting student leaders in delivering fantastic experiences and ensuring that students can achieve their fundraising targets.

You will coordinate the ongoing development of a high quality service alongside the RAG committee and Student Activities Manager, to help deliver excellent experiences for all volunteers.

You will have experience of fundraising and a commitment to good practice in this area. You will have excellent organisational skills and the desire to help students develop their skills and knowledge by supporting them to actively take the lead on fundraising projects and explore new ideas.

ACTIVITIES INTERN (MEDIA)

A new role for 2012, the Media Intern will support the activities of the Mancunion newspaper, Fuse FM and Fuse TV. There are a lot of changes going on in the way that our media outlets operate, and this is an exciting opportunity to be involved at a point where you can really contribute to the ongoing success of all three groups.

The Mancunion newspaper team produce 20 issues of the paper per year, as well as maintaining an active online presence. Starting next academic year, editorial responsibility for the paper will be taken by student volunteers. While it is vital that the paper remains student-led, you will work closely with the committee to ensure that the paper runs smoothly, is distributed effectively, and continues to develop as a leading example of student journalism.

Fuse FM are currently moving into new studios in the Activities Centre. With new equipment, online broadcasting and year-round airtime, Fuse FM is experiencing an exciting year. We want Fuse FM to continue to grow, and you will work to help raise their profile, increase their audience, and maintain and develop high quality output.

The newest of our media outlets is Fuse TV, which is already developing well with an expanded committee and increased involvement in events around UMSU and further afield. You will work with the Fuse TV committee to help them become an established UMSU media outlet, allowing increasing numbers of students to get involved and to increase their audience both on and off campus.

As well as supporting individual groups, the intern will work towards developing more cohesive student media, and facilitating links between media outlets and other student-led activities. You will work to encourage collaboration, develop high quality training and enable great experiences for students across all three groups.
